Snack Tectonics

What can you do with fruit roll-ups, graham crackers and frosting in your science class?
Have a yummy snack? You could, or students can learn about plate tectonics using the activity below. Each of the three snacks I listed above will represent various parts of the Earth. For example, frosting represents the asthenosphere, fruit rollups are the Earth's plates, and graham crackers are meant to be the Earth's crust. Students learn how tectonic plates (lithosphere) ride atop the slow flowing asthenosphere layer, and how they interact at their boundaries. This lesson fits well for the 6th grade California Earth Science content standards.

I taught this lesson in one of my multiple subject courses at Cal State Fullerton, and my classmates loved this lesson. Not only is this an educational lesson, but students will enjoy eating their finished models.
